Long Island Crashes with Pedestrians or Cyclists Sept 2015 -- Aug 2016

In September 2015 CLLI started collecting news stories about automobile crashes with pedestrians and cyclists on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties). Below is a tally of the crashes and a description of each one. (The tally is actually of the number of pedestrians and cyclist seriously injured or worse, not of the total number of crashes. If one crashed injured more than one pedestrian, we count that crash more than once.)

1. Unnamed Pedestrian, Killed

An unnamed male pedestrian was killed by a tractor-trailer cab on Veterans Memorial Hwy at the intersection of Feuereisen Ave. in Bohemia at 9 pm. Driver was not charged. (9/2/15)

2. Unnamed Pedestrian, Seriously Injured

An unnamed male pedestrian received a serious leg injury after a van hit him on the S service road of the LIE in Holtsville at about 11:45 pm as he was chasing after a driver responsible for a hit-and-run crash on the LIE near exit 62. The driver of the vehicle the pedestrian was chasing was charged with leaving the scene and a DWI. However, the driver who struck the pedestrian does not appear to have been charged with anything. 3. Elvin Ponce, Killed

30-year-old Elvin Ponce was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Redington St in Bay Shore at about 3:10 am. (6/5/15)

4. Karen Diaz, Killed

41-year-old Karen Diaz was killed on Clinton Ave. in Hempstead, just north of Lincoln Blvd at 12:49 pm. Ms. Diaz was believed to be homeless. No charges reported. (6/12/15)

57 year-old pedestrian Gary Williams critically injured in hit and run in Coram on NB side of Mill Rd. Victim was homeless and pushing a shopping cart. (9/16/2015)

22 year-old cyclist Charles Velasquez, of Queens, was killed while was traveling EB on WB curb lane of Old Country Rd, Carle Place, by a hit-and-run who was later apprehended, suspected of driving drunk and charged with vehicular manslaughter. (10/01/2015)

18. Dr. Kenneth Rich, Killed

51 year-old pedestrian Dr. Kenneth Rich, of Smithtown, killed by a NB vehicle on Route 111 just south of Maple Ave. in Smithtown at around 8:30 pm. Police suspect the driver was drunk and he was arrested and charged. In addition to the usual short blurb about this crash, Newsday has a more in depth article about the victim, Dr. Rich. 19. Unnamed Pedestrian, Critically Injured

Man, unnamed, critically injured walking in the roadway in front of 16 Orville Drive, Bohemia, when he was struck by a SB SUV at about 6:45 pm.  (10/9/2015)

21. Amaya George, Killed

18 year-old Amaya George killed in a crash while crossing Dutch Broadway Rd. in Elmont, NY.   The family is calling for motorists to slow down and for better enforcement of traffic laws that protect pedestrians.  (10/13/2015)

22. Rick Munoz, Killed

28 year-old Rick Munoz was killed on the Southern State Parkway in Uniondale, just east of Nassau Rd at approximately 1:46 AM. He was driving and crashed a stolen box truck and then walked into the Southern Parkway where he was hit by several cars that didn't stop. His passenger was also hit, but not killed. A dog riding with them was also hit and killed. We admit that every now and then it actually is the pedestrian's fault.  However, it is still disturbing that the cars did not stop and the dog had very little say on the unfortunate circumstances that put him on the Southern State Parkway. 23. Michael Dora, Killed

40 year-old Michael Dora, from West Babylon and bound to a wheelchair, was killed in a SB hit-and-run crash on Great East Neck Rd in Babylon. A 3/30/2016 article in the Daily News reports that the motorist who killed Dora was apprehended. His twin brother was also found guilty of a hit-and-run crash that left a pedestrian injured in 2013.  (10/16/2015)

32. Peter Accardi, Jr., Killed

61-year-old cyclist, Peter Accardi, Jr., was killed in Mastic on Montauk Hwy near Fulton Ave. while riding eastbound along the westbound lane. The accident happened at around 11 AM. 25-year-old single mother Brittany Leith killed crossing Southern Parkway near exit 36 at 4 a.m. after surviving a crash in which she flipped her car. She was going back to the vehicle, in the left lane, to retrieve something from it when another motorist side-swiped her vehicle. Yet another motorist hit the police car protecting her body, leaving the officer injured.  (11/29/2015)

68-year-old Teresa Kochan was seriously injured by a motorist in a Target Parking lot (124 E. Jericho Tpk) in Huntington Station around 7:55 p.m. Motorist was arrested for failing to have an interlock device installed on his vehicle. 56-year-old Mastic Beach contruction worker Peter Alker was killed at around 8 PM by a northbound vehicle on Sills Rd near North Dunton in East Patchogue. 67 year-old Matthew McKay was crossing Main Street in Huntington Village by an EB vehicle at 9:20 p.m. where he sustained serious injuries. No charges were filed. (2/14/2016)

68. Peter Quoma, Killed

28-year-old Peter Quoma was killed by a hit-and-run driver after getting out of his car to inspect a parked car he had run into. The owner of the parked car that was hit, 58-year-old Lynn May, was also killed by injuries sustained after being trapped against her car.The hit-and-run driver was caught on August 1 and she and her husband, who drove her away from the scene, were charged.  (2/19/16)

58-year-old Lynn May was killed by a hit-and-run driver while inspecting damage done to her parked car by another motorist, 28-year-old Peter Quoma, who was also killed in this crash. Ms. May died 8 days after the crash. The hit-and-run driver was caught on August 1 and she and her husband, who drove her away from the scene, were charged.  (2/19/16)

Unnamed pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by one motorist and then dragged by another on the LIE EB around 2 am. He had gotten out of his vehicle to tie up his bumper after crashing into the medium. The second driver was held on suspicion of being intoxicated. (4/7/2016)

37-year-old Claude Eleazer was struck at 10:30 pm by a westbound motorist as he crossed County Rd 39 in front of 801 County Rd 39, Shinnecock Hills.  Eleazer later died in the hospital. (4/8/2016)

25-year-old Skye Brunetti and her dog were killed around 9:15 am after walking Brunetti's 5-year-old son to school when a car lost control on Union Blvd in E. Islip, just west of Harwood Ave, and jumped the curb. Residents say speeding is an issue on Union Blvd. (4/12/2016)

64-year-old Warren Karstendick, who was blind, was killed by a hit-and-run motorist around 7 am as he was walking EB on the shoulder of Main St just west of Physllis Dr in East Patchogue. There was an article about the arrest of suspected motorist in 4/22/16 Newsday. (4/17/2016)

Four pedestrians were hit by an SUV on Linden Ave near Laurel Ave in Hempstead at just after 5 pm. One, a 56-year-old woman, was killed and only one was released from the hospital by the next morning (assuming two were seriously injured). One of the the other three was on a bike. The woman who was killed was breaking up a fight in the street. (4/20/16)

18-year-old Lauren Stephan was a passenger in a car that was involved in a minor accident in the WB HOV lane of the LIE between exits 40 and 39 in Old Westbury. The car she was in was in a minor accident and she, the driver and the other two passengers got out of the car. Shortly thereafter, around 11 pm, the car was hit by another vehicle and she and the driver of the car she had been in were killed.  (5/23/16)

19-year-old unnamed man was killed in a crash on the LIE WB between exits 40 and 39 in Old Westbury.  He and three passengers had been in an car crash in the HOV lane and all four of them had gotten out of the car when another vehicle hit them and the car, killing him and one of his other passengers, 18-year-old Lauren Stephan, at around 11 pm.  An article about Ms. Stephan referred to the other victim as Yousef.  (5/23/16)

108. Cari Widmyer, Killed

43-year-old Cari Widmyer killed when a SB SUV lost control and veered across the road, striking both Ms. Widmyer and her 72-year-old father while they were cycling NB at 2:46 pm near the curb line in front of 83 New South Road in Hicksville. The SUV then struck another vehicle and then slammed into a house, which was later condemned. The cause of the accident is unknown, but residents complained that speeding is an issue in this residential neighborhood. They have complained, but said nothing is ever done about it. The father was taken to the hospital with a non-life-threatening knee injury. (6/29/16)

34-year-old Crystal Hayes was left in serious but stable condition after being hit by a Jeep traveling EB o Sunrise Hwy in Southampton between exists 64 and 65 at 11:38 am. She and 38-year-old Christopher King had pulled over to the shoulder and left their vehicle to take pictures of a brush fire. King was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Jeep was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. (8/6/16)
