Long Island Crashes with Pedestrians or Cyclists Sept 2016 -- Aug 2017
In September 2015 CLLI started collecting news stories about automobile crashes with pedestrians and cyclists on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties). The data for the first year of this study (Sept 2015-Aug 2016) can be found here. Below is a tally of the crashes and a description of each one we have discovered from September 2016 through August 2017. (The tally is actually of the number of pedestrians and cyclist seriously injured or worse, not of the total number of crashes. If one crashed injured more than one pedestrian, we count that crash more than once.)

60-year-old pedestrian Nicholas Correa was killed by a motor vehicle while trying to cross the road at the intersection of Commack Road and Grand Blvd in Deer Park. No charges were filed. (9/9/16)
A 58-year-old cyclist was seriously injured by a hit-and-run crash on LIE North Service Road just West of Half Hollow Road in Dix Hill around 9 am. The motorist's car became disabled about 1/4 mile away, where he was found by the police. (9/10/6)
54-year-old James Zullo was killed by a motorist while crossing Rt. 347 in Nesconnset at about 4:25 pm. No charges were reported. (9/13/16)
Pedestrian Troy Pittman was killed by a SB vehicle on Henry St in Hempstead at about 9:20 pm. (9/23/16)
37-year old pedestrian, Vincente Perez, was hit by a car, going northbound of Bay Shore Rd at about 8:30 pm (9/27/16)
43-year-old man was trying to cross Middle Neck Road at Barstow Road when a vehicle traveling southbound struck him and left the scene. (9/30/16)
Oct 2016 Crashes: 7-11 (click on photo to scroll through)
70-year-old Jan Kalas was struck by a 2014 Honda Civic that was being operated by a 74 year old male who was heading southbound on Austin Boulevard. As a result of the collision Jan Kalas suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County Police Medic. (10/31/16)
After arriving at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and attempting to run across West Broadway from north to south at about 3:25 pm, the 10-year-old male pedestrian was struck by a westbound 2015 Lexus and was cast off into the eastbound lanes causing him to suffer multiple trauma injuries. (10/5/16)
76-year old Presley Bizzaro was riding his bicycle northbound across Sunrise Highway South Service Road when he was struck by a Toyota Camry making a left turn from Oakdale-Bohemia Road at 9:30 a.m. (10/14/16)
A 30-year-old man was serously injured by a hit and run on Peninsula Boulevard (eastbound) as he attempted to cross from the south side of the roadway to the north side near Greenwich Street. The driver only return a short time later, arrested. (10/21/16)
A longtime police crossing guard, Virginia Leviner, 66, was struck by a Truck. The tractor trailer was headed east on Grove and had turned right onto South Franklin when the rear trailer struck Leviner, who was standing in the street but not in the crosswalk, knocking her to the ground. (10/28/16)
Nov 2016 Crashes: 12-21 (click on photo to scroll through)
A driver in a Nissan Rogue, was speeding west on Jerusalem Avenue in North Bellmore. He hit the rear of a 2007 Nissan Altima, causing the vehicle to spin out of control. The Altima struck a 45-year-old female pedestrian from Wantagh as she was crossing north on Jerusalem Avenue. (11/4/16)
Warren Prochaska, 83, was walking east along Route 109 near the Southern State Parkway when he was struck by a Chevrolet Equinox about 6:30 p.m. (11/7/16)
Stephanie Semler, 51, was crossing Route 347 near Moriches Road about 5 p.m. when she was struck by a 2016 Honda Civic being driven westbound by a Nesconset woman, 25. (11/10/16)
A bicyclist suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Montauk Highway in North Bellport. The identity of the bicyclist was not released. Suffolk County police said only that the victim was male. the accident occurred at 6:23 p.m. near the intersection of Donegan Avenue. (11/10/16)
The tow truck was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway when it struck 26-year-old Rebecca M. Tighe, of Seaford, who was crossing northbound at Park Boulevard at about 4:45 a.m. (11/17/16)
The incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. State police say the driver of a Sunset Taxi was heading west on the highway near Route 24 when he suddenly saw a male pedestrian in the roadway. The taxi struck the man, who has been identified as 42-year-old Richard Styles. (11/20/16)
Marty Karl was crossing Manatuck Boulevard, north of Hemlock Drive, when he was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta at approximately 5:15 p.m. Karl, 65, of North Bay Shore, was transported by Brentwood Legion Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead at approximately 5:45 p.m. (11/23/16)
About 4:45 a.m. Jonathan Nieto-Carrillo, 27, of Hampton Bays, got out of a 2004 Nissan that was pulled over on the shoulder of the eastbound Long Island Expressway near Exit 58 in Islandia. Nieto-Carillo, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was struck by a 2008 Mazda being driven by Justin Wishnevsky, 39, of Ridge.
An unidentified 52-year-old woman walking across Sunrise Highway in Bellmore was killed when she was struck by a vehicle traveling east. About 1am on the 11/27/16.
Around 5pm the man was trying to cross Community Drive/Pond Hill Road when he was struck by a man driving a 2005 Honda Odyssey van. The driver returned about an hour later and was arrested. (11/30/17)

Ena Flores (47 years old) was crossing New York Avenue at Nassau Road in Huntington around 5 p.m. Sunday when she was hit (12/04/16).
Michael Haug was walking east on Main Street and crossing at Ocean Avenue in Islip when he was struck by a 2015 International school bus. The bus was traveling westbound on Main Street and attempting a left turn onto Ocean Avenue at approximately 4:30 p.m. when the incident occurred. (12/06/16)
Around 8 p.m., a man was riding his bicycle east on Forest Avenue in Locust Valley when he fell off and was hit by a 2015 Jeep Patriot also traveling east. The driver remained at the scene.(12/9/16)
A police spokeswoman said officers responded just before midnight to Granny Road near Horseblock Road for a call of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. (12/11/16)
Meade Pilaccio (64) was crossing Park Avenue when he was hit by a Dodge Durango that was responding to an emergency call with its emergency lights activated near the corner of Deer Park Avenue at 10 p.m. (12/14/16)
Benito Martinez, 44, was in a westbound lane of Route 347 when he was struck by a Chrysler minivan driven by Cynthia Smith, 56, about 7 p.m., just west of Moriches Road. (12/14/16)
A 34 year old male was crossing South Broadway (east to west) at South Oyster Bay Road, when he was struck by a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro traveling northbound on South Broadway. The male driver, who is also 34 years of age, remained at the scene. The victim was transported to a located hospital and is listed in serious condition (12/20/16).
Jan 2017 Crashes: 29-30 (click on photo to scroll through)
Arquimides Barrera was crossing from the west to the east side of Fifth Avenue, near Jeanse Rd in Bay Shore, when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee, at apporx. 5:45 pm (12/20/17).
The accident occurred at the intersection of West Main Street and Marcy Avenue at about 10:40 p.m. The driver remained at the scene and rendered first aid to the victim. The victim was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with a serious head injury. (1/27/17)
Feb 2017 Crashes: 31-37 (click on photo to scroll through)
The driver’s Toyota Corolla mounted a curb at the Walmart parking lot on Jerusalem Avenue at about 2:45 p.m., went through a fence and hit three women at the bus stop in front of the store. The victims, ages 58, 42 and 37, were admitted to an area hospital, police said. The 58-year-old victim was in serious condition Thursday night with head trauma, while the other two suffered leg injuries. (02/02/17)
While traveling southbound in the right hand lane of New Hyde Park Road near Marcus Avenue, the 50 year old male driver struck a bicyclist that crossed over into his lane of traffic. As a result of the collision the 74 year old male was thrown from his bicycle and upon police arrival was found to be Unconscious and unresponsive. He was transported to an area hospital with multiple trauma injuries and was later pronounced deceased by a staff physician. (2/15/17)
Fausto Rodriguez, 38, of Copiague, was struck by car going eastbound on Sunrise Highway (near Bayview Ave) around 6:00pm. Fausto was brought to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he was pronounced dead. (2/16/17)
A Farmingville man, Quincy Grant, 32, was seriously injured when he was struck by a Jeep while attempting to cross Middle Country Road/Route 25 in Selden. The victim was taken by Selden Fire Department ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital with undisclosed serious injuries. (2/20/17)
34-year-old Kristopher Flannery of Astoria was hit by a car on Glen Cove Rd while crossing the street. The victim worked at eye-surgery center near by and was going to work after parking his car in the parking lot across the street. (2/24/17)
A 52-year-old Miller Place woman was driving a 2015 Honda Pilot north on Miller Place Road when she made a left turn onto westbound Route 25A, striking Nicolo Signore, who was crossing Route 25A northbound on his bike at about 5:05 p.m. Signore, of Miller Place, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Honda driver stayed at the scene and was not injured. (2/24/17)
A woman was struck by an SUV and killed Friday night as she tried to cross a street in Ronkonkoma. The incident happened on Ronkonkoma Avenue shortly after 8 p.m. The victim, identified as 62-year-old Cynthia Chorzempa, of Holbrook, was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital. (2/24/17)

Deborah Batus was pushing a baby stroller filled with garbage when she was struck at the intersection of East Park Avenue and Pacific Boulevard at 6:32 a.m. There was no child in the stroller. Batus was transported to Long Beach Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:05 a.m. (3/2/17)
The pedestrian was walking southbound on Johnson Avenue when he was struck by a Chevrolet Impala near the corner of Frederick Street at 6:33 p.m. Friday. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released. The driver was not injured. (3/3/17)
The pedestrian was walking across Newbridge Road at the corner of West John Street when he was struck by a Ford Suburban at 6:29 a.m. The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a half hour later. His name was not immediately available. (3/13/17)
A female pedestrian was struck by a car on Lng island Ave, Deer Park. Police said the accident occurred at 6:24 a.m. The identity of the victim has not been released. Police said the driver, whose identity also was not released, remained at the scene. There was no criminality. (3/15/7)
The collision happened shortly before 1 p.m. at the intersection of Route 112 and Granny Road and that the biclyclist was injured. The delivery truck was traveling southbound on Route 112 when it struck the bicyclist who was attempting to Route 112 eastbound at Granny Road. She added the victim was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. (3/15/17)
Dominique Crifasi was crossing Suffolk Avenue near Lowell Avenue when she was struck around 8:30 p.m. Friday. The driver left the scene. Crifasi, age 23, was taken to Southside Hospital for treatment of several serious injuries, including a broken femur. She is expected to be OK. Crifasi is a single mother of a 4-year-old child. The vehicle was last seen heading east on Suffolk Avenue, but a description of the car was not available. (3/17/17)
April L. Varela was crossing Old Country Road at Kroemer Avenue, headed north to south, when she was struck by the westbound Chevrolet pickup at 11:30 p.m. The driver, Michael G. Kitz, 25, of Wading River, remained at the scene and tried to render first aid. Kitz was not charged. Police said Varela suffered head injuries and was transported to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was pronounced dead. (3/19/17)
Palma Pullo of Floral Park, an 80-year-old woman, was struck by a sport utility vehicle and killed Monday morning in New Hyde Park. Pullo was crossing Hillside from north to south when she was struck by a westbound 2015 Honda Pilot. The driver, identified only as a 40-year-old, rendered aid to Pullo, who police said was pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital-Northwell Health in Manhasset at 11:12 a.m. (3/20/17)
Jose Reinerio Salinas, 41, of Brentwood, was walking south in the middle of Washington Avenue near Rutledge Street at around 11:20 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle traveling south. Police were still searching for the driver, who they say fled the scene. After the collision, while Salinas was lying in the northbound lane of the road, police say he then was hit by a 2003 Ford Expedition. A physician assistant with the county medical examiner’s office pronounced Salinas dead at the scene. (3/24/17)
Dominick Geraci, 84, was standing on the side of the road when he was struck by a vehicle and killed in Centereach Monday night. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Gabrielle Gallagher, 27, was in a Ford Focus going south on Mark Tree Road at about 8:55 p.m. when she struck Geraci just north of Linda Drive. Gallagher, of Selden, was not injured and remained at the scene. (3/27/17)
An unidentified man was hit by a car that was traveling south on Nassau Road around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. The driver left the scene. The victim was unconscious and has suffered multiple injuries. (3/29/17)
Apr 2017 Crashes 49-53 (click on photo to scroll through)
At 12:25 a.m., Nicholas Santalucia was attempting to cross North Wantagh Avenue westbound at Boone Street when a 2012 Toyota Camry struck him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 46-year-old woman traveling north on Wantagh Avenue was driving the Camry. The driver, whom police did not identify, remained at the scene and was taken to a hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries and was later released. (4/2/17)
The crash happened at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Park Avenue. Upon arrival, the male victim, 28, was found to have suffered serious injuries to his head and body.Police arrested Frank Onolfi, 28, in front of the Baldwin train station shortly after the incident with the help of a vehicle description from a witness. Prosecutors say Onolfi admitted that he used heroin right before the incident. Authorities say eight bags of heroin were found inside the 28-year-old's car. Onolfi's attorney says his client is not guilty. Onolfi is charged with assault, vehicular assault, leaving the scene of an accident, criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while ability impaired by drugs. (4/3/17)
Ismael Ochoa, 50, of Mattituck, was crossing Route 25 at 7:45 p.m. after getting off the S92 bus when he was hit by a westbound 2011 Acura sport utility vehicle. Ochoa was treated by Mattituck Fire Rescue and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. (4/16/17)
A car hit two pedestrians on Merrick Road and Park Blvd. in Massapequa Park, according to multiple witnesses on the scene, the driver was taken away in handcuffs, but detectives still have not said whether any criminality was involved. The victims were transported to area hospitals. (4/22/17)
Suffolk County police said 33-year-old Vierka Batista-Coronado hit 44-year-old Jose Lino Martinez as he crossed Suffolk Avenue near Applegate Drive in Central Islip around 4:25 a.m. Martinez, of Central Islip, was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was pronounced dead. (4/23/17)
