This photo was taken on Westbury Avenue near Seaman Avenue in Hempstead, NY. The debris is too big for the street cleaner to pick up. (09.07.2015)
This is along my (Sylvia's) "nice" route to work that avoids riding on Hempstead Tpk.

This photo was taken on Hempstead Tpk, westbound, near Surrey Lane, Hempstead, NY. (09.07.2015)

This is along Hempstead Tpk westbound, just before Warner Avenue. It has looked like that for as long as I (Sylvia) can remember. (09.07.2015)

One would think that a ride through the park would be nice, at least, but there are no bike lanes or even sidewalks or shoulders here and this road does get pretty busy. (09.17.2015)

This is the "ramp" to the bike path along Merrick Ave across from Charles Lindbergh Blvd. There is this beautiful set of bike paths near Nassau Community College, around Charles Lindbergh and Earle Ovington Blvds. There is also a very nice bike path around Eisenhower Park. However, the path down Charles Lindbergh towards Eisenhower Park ends abruptly a few hundred feet from Merrick Ave. (If you are on the NB side, that leaves you in a very bad position when heading east.) So, you ride the section from the end of the bike path to Merrick Ave with traffic, but it is rarely that bad there. Once you get to Merrick Ave, you hope to cross with the light and catch the bike path that parallels Merrick Ave on the other side. However, for the only ramp to that bike path is a hole in the curb. It is like they just gave up on the bike lane system before they were done completing the circuits. (09.17.2015)

These are Freeport HS students waiting to cross Sunrise Highway to get to school shortly after 7 am. For a while, the student with the bike had been riding ahead of me (Sylvia) on the road that I am taking the picture from. (09.22.2015)

This is on Merrick Avenue southbound. The "shoulder" is studded with tree roots and poorly filled pot holes. (09.27.2015)

Hempstead HS students waiting to cross Front St at the SW corner of Front St. and Washington Ave. No crosswalks, no pedestrian walk signals and no crossing guards. It was a busy and very chaotic intersection. (09.29.2015)

A sidewalk crosses Penninsula Blvd with no crosswalk and no light. Penninsula Blvd is a very busy street at some times during the day. (09.29.2015)

There are two young men shown waiting in the median while crossing Hempstead Tpk from south to north where Walton Ave meets Hempstead Tpk. It isn't an unreasonable place for a pedestrian to want to cross since it is at a crossroads. There is, after all, a place for vehicles to turn there. (10.13.2015)

The intersection of Old Country Rd and Glen Cove Rd in Carle Place is a pedestrian's nightmare. My husband Bill took some videos of me (Sylvia) trying to cross one afternoon. Here is one: video. Every time I made the NB trip across Old Country Rd, I barely made it before the pedestrian light ended and I had to jog slightly to do it. One one of my SB trips, the video catches another NB pedestrian who barely makes the light with a slight jog.

Although there is a lot to get upset about as a pedestrian and cyclist on Long Island, every now and then you find places where there has been progress. The next photo campaign is to recognize those reasons to stay optimistic.

There is a network of beautiful bike paths. (Yes, paths, not just lanes!) They wind around Charles Lindbergh Blvd and Earl Ovington Blvd by Nassau Community College and behind the Nassau Collesium. Part of the network is a path between Eisenhower Park and Hofstra (Merrick Ave to Oak Street) on the north side of Hempstead Tpk, and along Merrick Avenue for the length of Eisenhower Park. There is even a pretty nice set of bike lanes on the road directly to the east of Nassau Collesium. I (Sylvia) will often opt for the slightly longer route to work to make use of those paths. There are definitely some issues with them such as circuits that confusingly stop just short of completing and the way it cross Meadowbrook Parkway. But over all, they are a huge positive. Kudos for those paths, Long Island!
