Long Island Crashes with Pedestrians or Cyclists Sept 2016 -- Aug 2017

In September 2015 CLLI started collecting news stories about automobile crashes with pedestrians and cyclists on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties). The data for the first year of this study (Sept 2015-Aug 2016) can be found here. Below is a tally of the crashes and a description of each one we have discovered from September 2016 through August 2017. (The tally is actually of the number of pedestrians and cyclist seriously injured or worse, not of the total number of crashes. If one crashed injured more than one pedestrian, we count that crash more than once.)

Total Crashes:                           54

            Total Fatalities:              32 (19 Suffolk, 13 Nassau)

Total Critical Injuries:     7 (2 Suffolk, 5 Nassau)

Total Serious Injuries:    15 (9 Suffolk, 6 Nassau)

Total crashes with no charges reported filed:      43

Total crashes involving alcohol or drugs:             1

Total hit-and-runs (motorist not caught):            5

Total hit-and-runs (later caught, not DWI):          3

Total other with some sort of appearance:          2
